Mido Multifort, Ref. 220 (c. 1947) Bumper Automatic Service and Repair
Introduction
This case study documents the service and repair of a vintage Mido Multifort Ref. 220, a classic example of early robust automatic watch design from Mido. This model is equipped with a “bumper” automatic module. This type of automatic is not as efficient as the more popular rotary style, but still does the job. The watch was received with performance issues related to the balance assembly, requiring both a complete service and a replacement of the shock protection spring.
Condition on Arrival
This watch arrived running but with unstable timekeeping and reduced amplitude. Inspection revealed an issue within the balance assembly—specifically the upper balance jewel setting within the KIF shock protection system.
The KIF shock protection spring, which secures the cap jewel and allows controlled movement of the balance staff during shocks, was broken.

Full Service Procedure
In addition to the shock protection repair, the movement underwent a complete overhaul:
- Full disassembly of the automatic movement
- Inspection of gear train, jewels, and winding system
- Ultrasonic cleaning of all components
- Proper lubrication with modern synthetic oils
- Reassembly and Regulation in multiple positions
After servicing, the watch demonstrated improved amplitude, stable timing, and reliable automatic winding performance. The images below show disassembly and reassembly after cleaning.

Brief History of the Mido Multifort
Introduced in the 1930s, the Mido Multifort was one of the earliest watches designed to combine several modern features into a single, durable timepiece. These innovations included:
- Automatic winding
- Shock protection
- Water-resistant case construction
The Multifort line helped establish Mido’s reputation for producing reliable, everyday wristwatches built to withstand real-world use. By the mid-20th century, models like the Ref. 220 continued this tradition with improved automatic movements and refined case designs.
Conclusion
The Mido Multifort Ref. 220 is a strong example of mid-century innovation in durable automatic watches. Repairs involving the balance and shock protection system are critical to restoring proper performance and ensuring long-term reliability.
