Rolex 6094 Cal. 740 Service and Repair, date star wheel and set bridge replacement

Introduction

This case study documents the service and repair of a vintage Rolex Datejust Ref. 6094 powered by the Rolex Calibre 740 automatic movement. Produced during the early years of the Datejust line, the Ref. 6094 represents an important period in Rolex history when the company was refining the automatic date mechanism that would become one of its most recognizable innovations. This particular watch, serial number 708471, arrived in largely original condition. While the base movement was running reasonably well, several components within the date mechanism exhibited significant wear and required replacement to ensure reliable operation and long-term durability.

Condition on Arrival

Initial inspection revealed that the Calibre 740 movement was fundamentally sound and running well, with the exception of the date advance. The date was stuck and not consistently advancing at midnight. When it did advance the numbers were not centered in the date window.

The date star wheel showed considerable wear, preventing reliable advancement of the date disk. In addition, the date indicator seat was heavily worn, cracked, and bent. Because this component helps guide and support the date disk during operation, its deterioration resulted in rough date changes and inconsistent operation.

Inspection also revealed a damaged setting bridge that required replacement to ensure proper operation of the keyless works and reliable setting of the hands and calendar.

Service Procedure

The watch underwent a complete mechanical overhaul including:

  • Full disassembly of the Rolex Calibre 740 movement
  • Inspection of all wheels, pivots, jewels, and automatic winding components
  • Ultrasonic cleaning of all movement parts
  • Replacement of the worn date star wheel
  • Replacement of the cracked and distorted date indicator seat
  • Replacement of the damaged setting bridge
  • Inspection and adjustment of the date-change mechanism
  • Reassembly using modern synthetic lubricants
  • Regulation and testing for proper timekeeping performance

Particular attention was given to the calendar mechanism, ensuring smooth date advancement and reliable operation of the vintage date complication.

Results

Following service and replacement of the worn calendar components, the movement operated smoothly with positive date advancement and improved overall performance. With the worn star wheel, date indicator seat, and setting bridge replaced, the watch was returned to reliable operating condition while preserving its originality wherever possible.

Brief History of the Rolex Ref. 6094

The Rolex Datejust was introduced in 1945 as the world’s first self-winding wristwatch featuring an automatically changing date displayed through an aperture in the dial. Early references such as the Ref. 6094 helped establish the design language that continues to define the Datejust today.

The Ref. 6094 was produced during the 1950s and utilized the Rolex Calibre 740, one of Rolex’s early automatic movements featuring a date complication. These watches are highly collectible today due to their historical significance, elegant proportions, and role in the evolution of the modern Rolex wristwatch.
