Service of Bulova 23 Jewel Self Winding Watch with Caliber 10BPAC Movement
Introduction

This case study documents the service and repair of a vintage Bulova 23 Jewel Self-Winding Watchpowered by the Bulova Caliber 10BPAC (similar to the Bulova Caliber 10 BOAC movement). These mid-century Bulova automatics are known for their dependable construction, attractive case designs, and smooth automatic winding systems.
This particular example arrived in generally good condition but required a complete mechanical service along with replacement of several age-related components to restore proper operation and appearance.
Vintage Bulova automatic watches remain excellent examples of mid-century watchmaking and continue to offer dependable performance when properly maintained. Preserving original details—such as fitting a correct NOS Bulova crystal—helps maintain both authenticity and appearance.
Service & Repairs Performed
The movement underwent a complete overhaul including:
- Full disassembly of the automatic movement
- Inspection of the winding system, escapement, and gear train
- Ultrasonic cleaning of all movement components
- Installation of a new mainspring to restore proper power reserve and amplitude
- Reassembly using modern synthetic lubricants
- Regulation
In addition to the movement service, the original crystal had become worn and hazy with age. To preserve the authentic appearance of the watch, it was fitted with a new old stock (NOS) genuine Bulova crystal, restoring both clarity and proper vintage profile. After servicing, the watch demonstrated strong running performance and reliable automatic winding. The dial was left in its vintage worn condition upon the owners request.

Brief History of the Bulova 10BPAC
During the 1950s and 1960s, Bulova produced a wide range of high-quality automatic wristwatches designed for everyday reliability and precision. The 23 jewel designation represented Bulova’s higher-grade movements, often featuring improved automatic winding systems and refined finishing.
The Caliber 10BPAC is part of Bulova’s well-regarded family of self-winding movements from this era. These watches were designed to compete with Swiss automatic watches while maintaining Bulova’s strong reputation in the American market.
