This case study documents the service and repair of a vintage Rolex Oyster Precision Ref. 6144 powered by the Rolex Calibre 710 manual-wind movement. Produced during the 1950s, the Ref. 6144 is an example of Rolex’s classic Oyster dress watches, combining the Oyster case with one of Rolex’s dependable hand-wound movements.

Condition on Arrival

This particular Ref. 6144 was in generally good mechanical condition but had gone many years without service. During inspection, an additional issue was discovered within the balance assembly. The end shake of the balance wheel required correction, as the underside of the balance was very lightly brushing against the pallet bridge during operation.

Service Procedure

The watch underwent a complete mechanical overhaul, including:

Complete disassembly
Inspection of the gear train, escapement, jewels
Ultrasonic cleaning of all movement components
Reassembly using modern synthetic lubricants
Regulation

Following servicing, the movement exhibited strong amplitude, and stable timekeeping appropriate for a vintage Rolex manual-wind movement.

Brief History of the Rolex Ref. 6144 and Calibre 710

The Rolex Ref. 6144 was introduced during the early 1950s as part of the Oyster Precision line. While Rolex was becoming increasingly recognized for its automatic Perpetual models, the company continued producing manually wound Oyster watches that offered the same high standards of quality and precision in a thinner, more elegant package.

The Rolex Calibre 710 belongs to the 700 family of manual-wind movements. These calibres are known for their rugged construction, excellent reliability, and straightforward serviceability. Even after more than seventy years, they continue to provide excellent performance when properly maintained.
