Antique Fusee Repeater Duplex Escapement: “Kingstreet Cheapside”
The mechanical restoration of this antique fusee repeater was especially rewarding due to its uncommon and historically significant duplex escapement, a mechanism rarely encountered in repeaters of this era. (See this webpage “INTRODUCTION TO THE WATCH ESCAPEMENT, AND WHY IT’S VITAL IN WATCHMAKING.) What makes this particular watch even more unusual is its use of a ruby cylinder, an enhancement intended to improve precision and reduce friction. Because a replacement jewel of this type is virtually impossible to source today, I fabricated a new cylinder from hardened steel, carefully shaped and polished to meet the escapement’s exact requirements. Restoring a timepiece of this complexity—combining the fusee drive, repeating mechanism, and duplex escapement—requires meticulous attention to detail, but the result is a remarkable revival of an extraordinary and historically important watch.
