Gallet Chronograph Repair with modified Venus 140 movement

Servicing this Gallet Chronograph with the modified Venus 140 movement (first iteration only had one pusher) that came into my shop required experience with early design Chrongraph movements. A complete service involved full disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning of all components, and careful inspection of the jewels, pivots, and gear train. The chronograph levers and column wheel are checked for wear and reassembled with the correct lubricants to ensure smooth engagement and reset function. This Chrongraph, among the many that I have serviced, is one of my personal favorites with its time subdial and well designed multi function dial.

History

The Gallet Chronograph with the Venus 140 movement stands as a remarkable example of mid-century Swiss watchmaking. Originally designed as a single-pusher chronograph, the Venus 140 used one button integrated into the crown to start, stop, and reset the timer. In this particular Gallet model, however, the movement was modified to a two-pusher design, separating the start/stop and reset functions for improved accuracy and ease of use.

The two-pusher conversion not only enhanced the watch’s functionality but also marked an important evolution in chronograph design—foreshadowing the modern configuration that would become standard in decades to come.
