Rolex Precision Ref. 4188 Service & Repair with Calibre 700 Family Movement

Introduction

Professional Vintage Watch Repair

This case study documents the service and repair of a Rolex Precision Ref. 4188, a classic mid-century dress watch powered by a manually wound movement from the Rolex Calibre 700 family. Like many vintage Rolex watches, this example arrived running but overdue for service, with aged lubricants and reduced performance

Service Procedure

The watch underwent a complete professional overhaul, including:

  • Full disassembly
  • Inspection of pivots, jewels, and wheel train components
  • Ultrasonic cleaning of all movement parts
  • Reassembly using modern high-grade synthetic lubricants
  • Regulation for stable timekeeping
  • Cleaning of the case while preserving original finish and geometry

After service, the movement demonstrated improved amplitude and stable timing performance appropriate for a vintage Rolex manual-wind caliber.

Brief History of the Rolex Precision Line

During the mid-20th century, Rolex produced a wide range of manually wound dress watches under the “Precision” designation. Unlike the brand’s Oyster Perpetual models, which used automatic movements and waterproof cases, Precision watches emphasized elegant design, thin profiles (snap back case), and reliable manual-wind calibers.

These watches were often fitted with movements from the Rolex 700-series, introduced in the 1950s and widely used through the 1960s. The series became known for its robust construction and serviceability, making it a dependable platform for Rolex dress watches of the era.

Inspection of the plate beneath the dial shows that the movement measures 10.5 ligne, a dimension that corresponds to the Rolex 700 family of movements. The movement layout is visually very similar to the earlier Rolex Calibre 600 family, which shares a nearly identical bridge configuration. However, the Calibre 600 measures 9.75 ligne, making the dimensional difference the key factor in identifying the movement correctly.
