In this repair and restoration case study, we document the complete service of this high-grade mechanical watch, including disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, lubrication, adjustment of the repeater and chronograph mechanisms, and final regulation for reliable performance. Whether your watch needs a full overhaul or precision restoration, this example highlights the level of expertise required to service complex repeater and split-seconds chronograph movements.

Description of this special antique Timepiece

Such a wonderfully complex piece to work on! I did not count the number of parts, but disassembly and reassembly is a slow and tedious process. However once all the adjustments are complete, it’s like magic to see and hear the hammers come alive striking the hour, quarter hour, and minutes.

Every part is engineered and finely manufactured to tight tolerances. The split sweep seconds hand can be stopped while the main sweep hand continues. When it is reset, the sweep seconds hands give the illusion of merging back into a single hand. It’s complexity and fine craftsmanship cannot fully be appreciated until you’ve held one in your hand.
